Music Lessons

Our music lessons follow the general 3-part structure of:  Music Theory (aural & written theory and/or composition), Technique and Repertoire.

Music Theory (written) is crucial to understanding the basic ideas, the "how and why" so to speak.  Written theory deals with writing musical notes and rests, basic rhythmic concepts, and how musical notes are generally organized.  An understanding of written music theory greatly improves your ability to play and appreciate how the music functions.  Music Theory (aural) deals with hearing, singing and reproducing sounds that you hear.  Music Composition is the culmination of written and aural music theory which involves writing/playing musical pieces that you create on your own.

Technique is equally important to the musician.  Nobody wants to play scales but you may have to.  The agility required to perform technical exercises vastly helps your ability to perform repertoire.  Many of the techniques learned are used in conjunction with actual musical works.

Repertoire is simply the songs you play.  You won't have to choose your own path, we have a methodology in place that's proven effective for many students.  As more is learned, we encourage our students to explore many different styles of music.  You're still going to have to play pieces by the masters (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart).  You simply can't be a musician without being familiar with some works of the truly great composers.  Most of our students prefer the classics,  but we do offer lessons for any number of other styles.  We like the students to pick something THEY would be interested in learning.  After all, learning happens faster and with greater result when you are motivated.
